why does my computer completely shut OFF???

i dont even know where to start on this....cuz i'm not recieving any kind of error...its just SHUTTING completely OFF!!??

i'm not even doing anything when it happens..
i got up to get something to drink....
look over and it just shuts completely OFF..

What could possibly shut my computer off??

i virus scanned everything a couple times even...

well! o'righty then!

i still didnt figure it out, but XP has this lil ditty called System Restore..
you can restore your computer back to a time when you werent having any problems....

Also be sure your power supply is not dying too. THat happened to me for a couple months it would just shut off on its own. THen one day, it didnt turn back on! They arent expensive and really not hard to put in... providing you dont cross wires! -cringe-

yes!yes! i was thinking about that too...
the 45$ Surge protector is going on 3 or 5 years now....and its been worth every penny...
they're only supposed to be good for a couple years......right???

Also the fan(s) could be dying...if it even hesitates for a second the computer will shutdown to protect it self from over heating....

It could also be cause its dirty... get a can of air and open the lil critter and blow everything off real good....especially the fan....

But I too was going to suggest the power supply.... that also happens when thats starting to dwindle....

Yes, you shouldnt use a surge protector more than a couple of years. Or more than a handful of power outages. Though the power supply on the back of your computer, like WM said, might be clogged up. Pull the top off your comp, blow it out and blow out the power supply fan, If you can get the air close enough itll work without taking that little box apart. I do it all the time... Its dusty here.
